RM 001: The Watch That Started The Argument

Richard Mille's first series was a tourbillon nobody asked for, built like a chassis and priced like heresy. Every RM since is a footnote to it. Sourced, vetted and sold by Watch Link.
In 2001 the RM 001 was an argument dressed as a wristwatch. A tonneau case in three parts held together by exposed spline screws, a baseplate you could see through, a tourbillon suspended in the middle of it, and a barrel and gear train laid out like a suspension system rather than a movement. It looked less finished than its contemporaries. It was, in fact, far more engineered.
The proposition was simple and unpopular: a tourbillon should be a working part, not a jewel. So the movement was designed around load paths. Bridges in titanium for stiffness against weight, a case shaped to spread shock rather than resist it, hand-finishing applied to components whose form was decided by function first. Nothing about the piece is decorative by default.
It also priced itself out of every existing category, which is the part the market remembers. Fewer than a hundred and fifty were made in the first series. Twenty-five years later the case shape is one of the most recognised profiles in the industry, and the RM 001 remains the only one where you can see the idea before the brand grew around it.
In rose gold the piece softens without losing its argument. The warm metal sits against skeletonised titanium and the contrast does the work a dial normally would. On the wrist a tonneau of this size should be awkward; it is not, because the caseback is curved to the wrist and the lugs are part of the case rather than added to it.
This example came to us with papers, booklet and service history — for an early Mille, service documentation is not optional. Complicated first-series movements accumulate their own biographies, and knowing who opened the watch, when, and what was replaced is the difference between a provenance and a story. We had all three before it was offered, and it has since been sold.
“A tourbillon should be a working part, not a jewel.
